Situated on the shores of the pristine Prapat Agung peninsula deep inside the West Bali National Park, NusaBay Menjangan by WHM resort actively supports the government’s program to set up a breeding centre for the National Park’s icon: Jalak Bali or Bali Starling bird.
Jalak Bali has mainly white feathers with black tips on its wings and tail. It is a medium large bird around 25 cm in length. The bird has blue bare skin around the eyes, greyish legs and a yellow bill. The Jalak Bali is native to the island of Bali in Indonesia, where it is the island’s only endemic vertebrate species.
The annual breeding season is between January and April, coinciding the rainy season in Bali. The Jalak Bali nest is made of grass and twigs in the big tree cavities with the female laying and incubating two to four blue green colored eggs. In 13 to 16 days, a new baby Jalak Bali will hatch and will leave their nest and learn to fly 15-25 days after birth.
On May 29th, 2017, NusaBay Menjangan proudly welcomed 2 pairs of the rare Jalak Bali and homed them in a custom-built menagerie consisting of a display cage (4×4 m) anda breeding cage (2×2 m). Hotel staffs have received training and guidelines from The National Park authority to take care of the birds. Built next to the Spa building, the guest can directly see the menagerie with these rare and protected birds during their stay in NusaBay Menjangan by WHM.
